Vice President Harris Announces Maternal Health Day of Action
On December 7, 2021, Vice President Kamala Harris marked the first Maternal Health Day of Action. The day is a nationwide call to action to improve maternal health in the United States. According to a 2018 investigation by USA Today, more women are dying due to childbirth complications in the U.S. than the rest of the developed world. A CNN article reports that the U.S. continues to have the highest maternal death rate among developed countries.
A key point of the White House’s rollout is an increase in funding the crisis. A proposed bill, currently before the Senate, would provide a $3 billion investment in maternal health. The money would improve data collection, diversify the perinatal workforce, and institute a number of other changes. “Mothers are the backbone of our economy, and their children are the future of our economy,” and Vice President Harris said at the summit where she announced the administration’s plans to address the crisis.
